2016 Southern Rhones and dumb phase – Clos Saint-Antonin Cotes du Rhone

Image ~ November 16, 2020 ~ Zoltán Németi
Yet another wine that makes me believe Southern Rhone reds are prime examples of wines which go through dumb phases. This looks even more closed down compared to my last bottle tasted 17 months ago (see post here).

Not a Shiraz – Mayer Syrah 2019, Yarra Valley, Australia

Image ~ November 10, 2020 ~ Zoltán Németi

Small production, artisanal Australian Syrah from a cooler climate. It indeed has nothing to do with bold Oz Shirazes. I found their Close Planted Pinot Noir 2012 quite stunning earlier this year, and while this Syrah is also pretty, it hardly comes close.

Oak and Garnacha – Alto Moncayo 2013 from Campo de Borja

Image ~ November 8, 2020 ~ Zoltán Németi

Back in September I held a tasting of top Grenache wines taken from my collection. The lineup consisted of many that I regard benchmark examples of the variety and a few that I have never tasted before. Continue reading →

Chateau Fontareche “Cuvée 1682” 2017, Corbieres

I hoped a bit more for the money, but this Corbieres is a good, pleasant red.

Most of it end up in blends, one can find only a few basic examples made entirely from this grape, from producers like Bolyki or Kősziklás, the latter is reviewed here.

One to prove how lovely Muscadet can be – and also that it ages well.

Fram Cinsault 2017

Image ~ October 20, 2020 ~ Zoltán Németi

South African Cinsault in Old World mode. Being Hungarian, to me this looks like a Mediterranean version of our Kadarka wines – a pale, light red that’s easy to drink and love.

Star buy red – Domain Abbaye Sylva Plana “La Closeraie” 2018, Faugeres, Languedoc

When the Languedoc delivers, it’s hard to beat. Continue reading →

Solid Furmint sparkling from Tokaj: Péter

Image ~ September 24, 2020 ~ Zoltán Németi

I find it a bit confusing that besides many sweet and dry white styles Tokaj producers started to make sparklings in recent years as well. Nevertheless this example from Péter Pince is quite convincing…
