Reliability and value are not things Burgundy is famous for (as opposed to the Southern Rhone, for example). I wouldn’t say this is a bad wine, but I wasn’t happy with it. Continue reading

Mark Haisma Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2022
I wanted to taste a wine from Mark Haisma since I read about him in Jamie Goode’s Wine Science book (in the chapter about using whole bunches in the ferment), but his wines are not easy to find. After a lot of search I found merchant Wijn op Dronk in the Netherlands, who delivers to Luxembourg where a friend of mine lives – it’s complicated, but at the end I received the bottle when he visited Budapest.
Affordable Burgundy: Domaine Forey Père et Fils Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 2023
If you are not familiar with the category, a Passtoutgrain is a burgundy blend which always contains gamay (at least 15%) – and it’s on the cheap side when it comes to this superstar wine region. This one from Domaine Forey Père et Fils could actually pass as pure pinot noir.
Jadot Couvent des Jacobins Bourgogne 2022
Value in Burgundy: Paul Delane Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise 2023
To continue the cheap Burgundy thread, here is another example of something affordable which is actually quite good. Was 12,74 € if you buy one but only 8,90 € if you pick two bottles, no wonder it ran out of stock at Vinatis.
Felton Road Pinot Noir Calvert 2020
I cannot remember the last time I tasted a Felton Road pinot, it might be 10 years ago or so. Based on this 2020 bottling, not much has changed – the style is basically the same and the quality is still high. And the prices just moderately increased during the years, which is a rare thing.
Affordable Burgundy: Domaine Des Chambris Hauts Cotes de Nuits 2022
Affordable red burgundy to buy: Domaine des Remparts Irancy Les Cailles 2022
At 18,38€ this is still a very affordable burgundy and I had no big expectations to be honest. But then I was blown away by the beauty of the wine… buy until stock last!
Can cheap red Burgundy be good? Doudet-Naudin Macon 2020
After some search, this was one the cheapest red Burgundy I found online in Europe – admittedly I mostly looked for merchants in Germany, as they are the most reliable and they almost always deliver wines to Hungary (and at a fair price). These days you won’t find many wines from this genre that cost less than 10 €, and those, just like this one, are most likely not a pinot noir, but a blend with gamay. It’s very good nevertheless.
