The very unique Kék Bajor 2024 from 1B3 Winery

I’m a fan of the old Hungarian varieties and the work of bringing them back, started by József Szentesi two decades ago. No coincidence that you can find many of these wines covered on this blog (see this link for the posts), and let me introduce you a new wine: the kék bajor from the 1B3 Winery.

To my knowledge they are the only other producer of this variety in the country (hence in the world, too), besides Szentesi (his wine is reviewed here, although from a not too successful vintage). Their production is extremely tiny, only about 20 litres (!!) were made in recent years, but hopefully it will increase it in the future – please deers, don’t eat these grapes!

What a promising variety this is, based on this wine. Reminiscent to nebbiolo in some ways, the color is pale and already has some brown hints, and the powdery, grippy tannins also point to the Italian variety – although there are no excessive dryness here. Super spicy aromatics, featuring carob powder and dried orange skins. Its texture is really special: low alcohol lightness combined with crisp acidity and those beautiful, very firm tannins, giving a pleasant bite, a certain edge to the wine. A real adventure, it’s different, it’s exciting. Great wine, 90 points.
