Supermarket wines – Eszterbauer Sógor Kadarka 2020

Kadarka is difficult to grow which makes it expensive to produce, and there isn’t much of it planted. So to see this wine for just above 3 euros on shelves is a shame – a sign of hard times wine growers face these days.

While not reaching the charm of the previous vintage (2019, reviewed here), the 2020 is still a nice kadarka. A bit less definition, reduction hides some details, but kadarka’s special character still shines through. It’s simple but captivating, savoury and bright. Spicy with cherry and rose hip notes, fragile on the palate, supported with good acidity. There is tension and tightness here, something that reminds me of red Burgundy. Good, recommended (84 points). Drink now-2023, 1400-2000 HUF (3.5-5 Euros, Lidl, Auchan etc, widely available in Hungary). Source: own purchase.
