One more csókaszőlő on the horizon!

Image ~ November 7, 2022November 7, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi

Just a micro batch, but there is now one more csókaszőlő red wine on the market, joining the very few others that exist today. Szentesi József, Vylyan, St. Andrea and Bussay are the producers who already released such variety (I might miss a name or two), and now you can taste one from Kovács András and Tóth Kinga, if you are lucky enough – it’s extremely limited. Another Loire cabernet franc and another amazing affordable wine. This is just perfect for what it is, pure and terroir driven. Give me more!

Supermarket wines: Eszterbauer Tanyamacska Kékfrankos 2020

Image ~ October 26, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi

Eszterbauer is one of my favourite Szekszárd producers, and their entry level reds are rarely disappointing. Even though 2020 doesn’t seem to be the best vintage for them.

Welschriesling done well – St. Donát Csopak Hegybor 2020

Image ~ October 23, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi

I bought this bottle at the cellar door, when visited this great Csopak producer in July. I’m still impressed, I reckon this is one of the best olaszrizling (welschriesling) out there. Continue reading →

Image ~ October 21, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi

I have probably written this many times, but again, Bordeaux is one of the best wine regions offering great value reds. Probably it’s the best, considering the volume of these wines and also the reliability – I’m rarely disappointed. This Chateau Haut Redon is proving the point.

Burgenland blaufrankisch: Feiler-Artinger 2019

Image ~ October 19, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi
When you walk around in the pretty town of Rust, you can’t miss the beautiful Feiler-Artinger weingut. It was just later that I realised that it’s this building on their wine labels, with which I’m familiar with. For example on this blaufrankisch, which is their entry level wine.

My favourite wines – Bertrand & Vincent Marchesseau Poids Plume Bourgueil 2021

When it’s well made, there is nothing I love more than Loire Valley cabernet franc. This is a great example, I enjoyed it to the last drop.

Grapes never tasted – Szentesi Kék Bajor 2020

Image ~ October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 ~ Zoltán Németi
Kék bajor is another almost extinct Hungarian grape variety József Szentesi is trying to bring back to life. According to him, it gives lighter wines. This is not the first vintage, but I’m not sure if it was ever released on the market – this 2020 is now available to buy.
