Frontonio Supersonico Garnacha 2022

Bodegas Frontonio is among the serious producers when it comes to high-end garnacha/grenache (see the Judgement of Wimbledon Blind Grenache Tasting post from Greg Sherwood MW) and as grenache is one my absolute favourite grape varieties, I had to try their wines. I did not go to the top wine with my first shot, but this €27 Supersonico is already a highly rated one (Parker 95). Unfortunately it turned out to be a disappointment.

Such a minty nose, this could be Australian grenache just based on that. Cooked strawberries, brown spices, a candied edge – it’s varietal for sure. While complex and intense, quite disjointed on the palate, sharp acidity makes it sour and challenging, to the point that it’s like biting into a lemon. Ageing might help a bit but will it ever become enjoyable? I’m not sure. 81 points.
