Two examples of királyleányka, a Transylvanian white grape variety

Királyleányka (a.k.a. fetească regală) is a hardly known variety found mainly in Romania, but it’s considered as a native one here in Hungary as well. It’s slightly aromatic and the grapes are so tannic that you don’t want to eat them – hence the resulting wine almost always has a bit of a tannic grip, even with careful processing.

Bolyki Királyleányka 2025

Crisp, flowery and grapey, this is all about varietal character and freshness. Lots of peaches, too, on the aromatic nose. Hardly medium-bodied, tight, the acidity is quite lively, and there is the trademark phenolic grip in the finish which adds just a bit of edge. A textbook example of everyday királyleányka,  good (85-86/100), 6,5€

Mosia Panciu Fetească Regală 2023

An elegant take on the variety. Not as aromatic as I would expect, it’s fresh with clever nutty tones adding interest. It’s quite refined, medium-bodied and seamless. It has some complexity and seriousness and tons of personality. A precise, well-made wine with lots of personality, highly recommended. Very good (88/100), 8€
