Supermarket wines: Eszterbauer Sógor Kadarka 2023

The Sógor kadarka is back on form! The 2023 is as good as the best vintage I have tasted yet, the 2019. It’s good news, regarding that the 2022 was a disappointment. It’s a bit early but so far it seems that 2023 yielded the most charming and delicious Hungarian wines in recent years. Even though it was a disaster for most wine producers…

This is how kadarka tastes when it’s good. Light as a feather, yet so intense, full of energy. So pretty, loaded with cherry and flowery notes. Savoury, nuanced, and just a bit herbal, as typical for the variety. Airy, delicate on the palate with refreshing acidity and low tannins. Thirst quenching and charming like a pinot noir. Coup de coeur, 87 points. Great value for 2690 HUF (7 €), 1400 in Lidl when available (3,5 €).
