The San Zenone Chianti distributed in Aldi is one of the cheap reds I buy every vintage. At 4€ it’s really a basic, simple quaffer, but it is usually decent and it’s not easy to find affordable chianti in this country (Hungary) and I’m always thirsty for sangiovese. And this 2024 is something else.
Unusually pure and bright for an entry level chianti. The nose is just pretty, full of bitter cherries, it’s so fresh and intense. No oak in sight, thankfully. Light to medium-bodied yet tight, this has the charming austerity of sangiovese, those beautiful drying tannins giving shape and structure. Perfectly balanced, bone dry, such a pleasant drink. A little beauty, I love this. 86 points (in its class: 10/10), fantastic value for 4€, buy by the case! Drink now – 2027.
