Before our visit to the winery this spring I only tasted a few wines from Dorli Muhr, one of the top blaufrankisch producers of Austria. They were quite different from other Austrian reds and it all made sense when we met her in the cellar. Go visit wine producers!
Her Carnuntum 2019, a blaufrankisch-syrah blend is such a distinctive wine. It’s the antithesis of the modern, oaky and ripe red wine style. Aged, developed cool climate aromatics. There’s real intensity here with vintage sour cherry jam, dried herbs, licorice and jasmine notes. It’s built on beautiful, crisp acidity, like a white wine. Seamless, mellowed and juicy. Lots of flavour in an effortless way. A graceful and exciting wine. 12,5%. Ready now, drink to 2025. 90 points. €20,23 at the cellar door.
While writing this post I bumped into my tasting note of the Muhr von Niepoort Spitzenberg 2007 from 2011 (tasted alongside a Rousseau Chambertin and other great Burgundies). Let me share it, just for the sake of context:
