What a shame that dessert wines are not fashionable these days – this is a category which Hungary excels in. Even outside Tokaj, just look at this late harvest Muscat from Mátra producer Gobri.
Kerekes Syrah 2018
Syrah has good potential in Hungary in my opinion, but this one is not there yet to prove my theory, unfortunately. Continue reading
Alain Jaume Les Gélinottes Ventoux 2019
I loved the 2016 vintage of this wine, mostly when it was in its primary state, though (2016 Southern Rhone reds quickly went into a dumb phase in my experience, see also here). The 2019 is good, but not on the same level.
Like a Hungarian Grüner Veltliner: Bakonyi Csavargó 2019
Not a pure Grüner Veltliner actually as it’s blended with some local grapes (30% Hárslevelű, 10% Olaszrizling and 10% Királyleányka), but it speaks the GrüVe language for sure.
Stéphane Montez Syrah 2018
A Northern Rhone Syrah from an emerging region, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes. Promising but I’m not fully convinced.
Another solid supermarket Chianti – Tesco’s 2015
Just what I expect from a Tesco Finest wine: restrained and elegant, like the other wines in the range. If I’m not mistaken Master of Wines do the selection for Tesco, and they always pick the balanced, pure wines, not the over-oaked, over-ripe examples.
Good entry level Kékfrankos: Koch 2017
Let’s forget how ridiculous is to call a 3€ wine “premium”… this is very basic of course but it’s good for what it is. Continue reading
Minimal intervention Kékfrankos: réka.koncz A Change of Heart 2019
A newcomer to the Hungarian wine scene. You can tell from the eye-catching design that it’s a low intervention wine – and it tastes like that indeed.
Great dry Tokaji: Kikelet Hárslevelű Lónyai Single Vineyard 2012
No notes taken, a friend brought the bottle for dinner. Aging dry Tokaji is a risky business based on my somewhat limited experiences, but this one might actually look better now than as a young wine. Continue reading
Koch Frisch Kadarka 2018
Liked this Kadarka at a public tasting a few months ago, so wanted to try it at home. Continue reading
