A taste of cheap Chateuneuf du Pape – Domaine Lucien Barrot et Fils 2015

Drinking in Avignon, supermarket wine #3. I can’t exactly remember the price but it falls into the cheap Chateauneuf du Pape territory, which is danger zone – almost always a disappointment. When it’s not, like in this case, it’s a bad value: you better buy wines from less famous appellations, they offer more enjoyment for less money.

Half bottle. Worryingly light color, then a shy, old school nose. Surprise, but it’s not bad at all, just thin and simple for a CdP. But pleasant otherwise, with a round, soft palate, easy-drinking style – almost Pinot-like airiness. More than acceptable, it has some Grenache-charm, but still overpriced, many plain Cotes du Rhone reds are superior to this one.

Rating: OK to good, 84 points. In its class: poor.
Price: Around 12 probably, in a local shop.
Value: poor.
Drinking window: 2019-2020.
Source: I bought it in a shop in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
