Lovely Beaujolais: Domaine du Mont Verrier Villages 2022

Brought this bottle to a tasting with friends, and everybody loved it. I’m not always as successful with Beaujolais Cru but this time it really shined. It reminds me to the 2019 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette, by the way.
The 2020 vintage of the the Georges Duboeuf Beajolais Nouveau was on top of the game, close to the very best nouveaus I have ever tasted. But the 2022 edition is a disappointment.
The Brouilly 2019 last time was not my favourite wine from Richard Rottiers, but the current Moulin-á-Vent (2021) is again outstanding, the kind of wine which makes me a fan and follower of this top Beaujolais producer.
I have been buying Pierre-Marie Chermette’s Griottes every year since 2015. Partly because it’s one of the very few Beaujolais Nouveau available in Hungary but also because it’s quite reliable and simply delicious.
I could only repeat what I said about the 2017: the Clos de la Roilette is a benchmark for Beaujolais Cru. This 2020 is a rockstar.
It’s titled Vieilles Vignes (old vines), but just like other similarly priced (around the 8€ mark) and well made Nouveaus, it’s easily up to most Beaujolais Crus in quality. Just like others I have been buying in recent years.
Beaujolais Cru is one of my all time favorites in red wine, there is just nothing like it. And it is often so cheap, as in this case.
Big producer doesn’t mean bad wine. This Nouveau from the giant of Beaujolais is as good as the artisanal ones I used to try.
Do you think Beaujolais Nouveau should be drink in one or two months after release? The cheapest and simplest ones, yes, probably. But surely not the good bottles.
