Next in the big red lineup I mentioned last time was the Sauska 7 Siklós, a Bordeaux blend from Villány. Compared to the Merengő, it comes from a warmer region and there is no kékfrankos included in it, yet the wine is not that dissimilar.

Yalumba Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
I’m sure that many wine lovers will rate this Yalumba higher and indeed it has the depth of a serious wine, yet it failed to impress me.
Penfolds Rawson’s Retreat Shiraz Cabernet 2021
The cheapest Penfolds wine I think, and it’s usually quite good. I liked the 2019 more, but this 2021 is not far behind…
Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Supermarket wines – Lidl Médoc 2020
World class cabernet from Australia: Cape Mentelle 2010
Australian Cabernet to try: Domaine Naturaliste Discovery 2017
A Margaret River Cabernet that is well priced compared to its peers. It also feels less “made” than many, I liked it a lot, it’s clearly one to recommend.
Affordable great Bolgheri – Grattamacco Rosso 2017

The little brother to the famous Super Tuscan Grattamacco, Rosso is already a serious wine, and a great value, too.
Hungarian rosado: a lovely siller from Kékhegy
Kékhegy Piroska Siller 2018
An almost extinct Hungarian wine style: siller. Basically it’s the same as Spanish rosado, i.e. a darker colored, heavier rose. Classically it’s made from Kadarka, which, being a thin skinned grape results in a siller anyway, but here is a different approach: Cabernet Sauvignon with short maceration.
