Late harvest Kadarka, made from Botrytized grapes is not uncommon in Hungary. But it’s not the reason the Toronyi 2016 from Szekszárd is so interesting.
This is an unusually rich Kadarka, a quite hedonistic take on the variety. A bit Tawny-like, raisiny, somewhat sweet and hot on the finish with it’s 15% alc. – I actually like that. So generous and flavorful, without any oak influence. My only concern is the medicinal, earthy character of Bortytis which holds me back from liking it. I prefer the 2017.
