A carbonic maceration cabernet franc – Domaine Breton La Dilettante 2020

I rarely buy low SO2 wines anymore as there’s a lot I don’t like about this wine  trend, but La Dilettante amazed me ten years ago so I wanted to give it a try. Well, I’m not the same wine lover as back then…

Funky for sure. Clearly a low SO2 wine, this will be controversial – I’m somewhere in the middle. I don’t like the uniform “natural” character, the iodine and animal notes that are pronounced and somewhat overwrite the variety, but behind these there’s a good wine. The herbal cabernet franc perfume comes through somehow, intensity is great, it jumps out of the glass. Fine texture, quite full on the palate, there’s some seriousness to it, it’s more akin to a Beaujolais Cru than a Nouveau. I love the solid structure, the grippy tannins and it’s quite juicy. With clean aromatics this could be something special. Buy only if you tolerate a big dose of funk. All in all, good wine, 85 points. 16,87€ on Vinatis. Source: own purchase.
