Felton Road Pinot Noir Calvert 2020

I cannot remember the last time I tasted a Felton Road pinot, it might be 10 years ago or so. Based on this 2020 bottling, not much has changed – the style is basically the same and the quality is still high. And the prices just moderately increased during the years, which is a rare thing.

Quite developed, already showing tertiary notes, though definitely not old, and it is singing right now. Open for business, jumps out of the glass. It’s not a Burgundy imitator, more seductive, less savoury, yet absolutely pinot-like, nuanced and delicate. Smokey Black Forest ham, forest floor, black cherries and plums on the nose, there is real complexity here. That nutmeg oak smells very expensive. Quite compact on the palate, hardly medium-bodied but big on flavour. Smooth and round with just enough structure. A refined, top notch pinot, although dare I say it does not have the Old World charm of Burgundy. 93 points, 59 € at Lobenbergs etc, widely available in Europe. Drink now (to 2027).
