Being able to taste a Wendouree in Central Europe feels special When my Aussie connection, Attila Halász came to Budapest in the summer, he brought two bottles with him actually – what a treat it was. Especially as one was the shiraz, the most admired wine of this cult producer.
Wendouree Cabernet Malbec 2021
Very young, but not unapproachable. I’m not a firm believer of the theory that these wines need considerable time or they can age so long (see the post about the 2010 malbec here), anyway. It’s leafy with allspice notes on the nose, and has that European-like savouriness, that traditional character that makes it so appealing. Quite linear and tight on the palate, medium to full-bodied, not bigger, but with a dense core. Bone dry and structured, tannins are properly firm but not drying. A wine of contemplation and nuances. Outstanding, 95 points. Drink now – 2030.
Wendouree Shiraz 2021
My second Wendouree shiraz (see the post about the 2019 here) and the best wine I have tasted from this producer so far. This is magical, blowed me away with the first sniff already. Unmistakeable Wendouree style with equally well delivered varietal character. Dark aromas, black pepper – a nod towards Northern Rhone -, some vegetal notes and grapefruit, which is such a syrah thing. And what a mouthfeel – it’s silky smooth yet tight, dense and seamless. Gently firm tannins, there are no rough edges here. A perfect balance at 13,8% ABV. A truly special wine. 98 points. Absolutely enjoyable now. [Erin Larkin: 98 points]
