My favourite wines: Tyrrell’s Semillon 2023

Hunter Valley semillon is a unique white wine style (although Australian riesling is similarly built one could argue) and while not widely available in Europe, it’s really worth seeking out. Start with this one from Tyrrell’s – it’s  one of my favourite whites consumed in the last few months.

Vibrant, steely, clean as a whistle. There is an Old World restraint to it, it’s elegant and finessed. Limes, unripe grapes and green peppercorns on the nose. Just a tiny bit of semillon’s vegetal notes in the background. Linear palate, glossy acidity, perfect balance – this has class. It’s serious yet so light on its feet, the low ABV (11,8%) is a real bonus. A great wine, 91 points. It will slowly evolve for 10-15 years, but I would drink it young. Bought it at 8wines.com, but available in many online shops in Europe and UK, around € 23.
