Supermarket wines: the dirt cheap yet nice Eje Monastrell 2022 from Lidl

I haven’t seen this wine in the local Lidl since the 2017 vintage in 2019, but the current 2022 appeared on the shelves recently and I grabbed a few bottles. Thankfully it’s still well-made, over-delivering for its pricepoint and absolutely enjoyable.

This is a lighter, less concentrated version of monastrell, but it’s also more savoury and more drinkable than most. Sun baked yet not jammy. Medlar fruit, bitter chocolate, nutmeg aromas, the aromatics are classic monastrell, just like the gently firm, nice tannins. This feels like real red wine, honest, no make-up, I like the purity here. Quite good, 86 points. It was only 3€ (1200 HUF) on shelves, that’s a joke – great value without a question. Drink now.
