Eszterbauer is one of my favourite Szekszárd producers, and their entry level reds are rarely disappointing. Even though 2020 doesn’t seem to be the best vintage for them.
Not as good as the lovely 2019 of this wine, but still good, especially for the humble asking price. Some molasses-like, smokey oak, fruit expression is a bit hidden behind it. Savoury and almost Tuscan-like nose with dried cherries. The brightness, crisp acidity of kékfrankos and the generosity of Szekszárd reds are on show on the palate, it has drive and it’s also smooth and seamless. Light and easy drinking, a pleasant mid-week quaffer. Drink now-2023. 84 points, 1400-2000 HUF (~4 EUR), great value for 1400. Stockists: Spar, Auchan, cellar door.
