Cru quality Cotes du Rhone: Saint Cosme 2023

Image ~ October 5, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
I bought Saint Cosme wines every year around 2010 and really loved the producer – I even visited them in 2013 which was a great experience. Then I somehow missed many vintages so I was happy to re-visit them again – and what a return! This basic cuvée was always great value but the current vintage is next level. I need to buy more!

Pieropan Soave Classico 2023

Image ~ September 12, 2024September 12, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi

A classic that I always wanted to try. Regular Soave can be quite dull, but this is anything but dull. I liked it a lot! Continue reading →

Summer red: Rhonea Les Artistes Rouge 2022, Cotes du Rhone

Image ~ August 18, 2024August 18, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
If you know the red wines of Southern Rhone then this might surprise you. 11,5% ABV? Does not taste like an early harvested wine and it turns out that some of its alcohol was just removed. Sounds weird but the result is appealing.

Outstanding Beaujolais Cru: Chateau Grange Cochard Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2015

Image ~ August 5, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
I often read that Beaujolais Cru ages surprisingly well, but on the contrary I mostly find that they develop relatively quickly – tasting mature and tertiary as a 5 years-old wine. But this isn’t one of those cases.

Old kadarka vines in Szekszárd at the Márkvárt Pince

Image ~ July 16, 2024July 16, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi

Hungary has a long history of winemaking but it does not have many old vineyards – the 20th century wasn’t kind to us. But you can see a kadarka plot in these pictures (click on them to enlarge), planted in 1935.

Solid Hungarian rose – Konyári 2023

Image ~ July 15, 2024July 15, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi

One of the well-known and widely distributed roses in Hungary, the Konyári is also one of the best of its class, avoiding the typical mistakes of its peers. No off-putting bubble gum aromas here. It’s also contender of the prettiest rose label in the country…

Two rieslings from Luxembourg: Schmit-Fohl and Kohll-Leuck

Image ~ July 11, 2024July 11, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
Here we have two rieslings from Luxembourg, from two producers. Kohll-Leuck makes outstanding pinot gris (the Rousemen is one of the very best examples of the variety I have ever tasted), so my expectations were quite high towards their riesling, but the winner is Schmit-Fohl this time – a name new to me.

Svirce Plavac Mali Mediterano 2019

Image ~ July 9, 2024July 9, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
I had my first Croatian wine just a few years ago and while my experiences are still quite limited, I loved every single one from the country so far – including this plavac mali. Thanks, Matthew Horkey for introducing Croatia to me!

Dominio de Anza Rioja 2021

Image ~ June 24, 2024 ~ Zoltán Németi
Opened this Rioja with high expectations, but it let me down. For over €20 and with a 94p WA score I hope for an outstanding wine but this is far from that. Re-tasted it in many contexts with the same conclusion.
