I often read that Beaujolais Cru ages surprisingly well, but on the contrary I mostly find that they develop relatively quickly – tasting mature and tertiary as a 5 years-old wine. But this isn’t one of those cases.
Interestingly, my previous bottle, opened in 2018 was so closed that I struggled with it and I was not sure if it would ever become convincing. But here we have my last bottle and it is singing!
Smells like serious wine. Dark, ripe, powerful with great depth. Dried black cherries, a touch of marzipan; faded roses and hibiscus from the carbonic maceration add extra character. Structured, firm, this is anything but a light wine. Lovely, grippy tannins. This has the weight of a Southern Rhone red. Starts to mellow on the palate, but no signs of age flavour-wise. A great wine; if the alcohol wouldn’t be noticeable, I would rate it even higher. 91 points. Drink now – 2027.
