Australian nebbiolo is quite different from Piedmont versions, but it can be great, too. Made with semi-carbonic maceration this Mayer Nebbiolo is even more unusual – and what a nice wine it is!
Pinot-like is probably not an exaggeration. Fragrant and graceful. Rosehips, cooked fruits and some leafy notes suggesting whole bunches. Airy and unforced, built on great acidity. Tannins are nebbiolo-like, but in the Australian way, tamed, balanced, not severe. It’s like a high-end drinking wine, delicate and complex. 92 points. Hard to get in Europe, mine was 42 Euros at Weinhalle.
