Based on recent vintages, the general quality of Loire Valley cabernet franc is quite high in my experience – at least in the 7-15€ range. These wines have a soul, they are pure, terroir-driven and absolutely delicious. The entry-level red from Yannick Amirault is no exception.
Just a bit funky and old school. Jumps out of the glass and also quite lively. Violets, ink on the nose, next to leafy, graphite and leather notes. No oak in sight. Light on its feet but not on flavour – perhaps the right word is smashable. Bone dry but rather juicy than austere. The lowish alcohol (13%) makes it even more refreshing. Big thumbs up, 89 points. Drink now, although it can be kept for a few years. Retailer: Vinatis, €13.95 or 15,36 £.
