Dominio de Anza Rioja 2021

Opened this Rioja with high expectations, but it let me down. For over €20 and with a 94p WA score I hope for an outstanding wine but this is far from that. Re-tasted it in many contexts with the same conclusion.

The natural cork comes out in perfect condition. Closed on nose, not giving much – some vegetal notes like green peppercorns, suggesting whole bunches, and a bit leather. It’s full-bodied but restrained, there is a sense of concentration here, yet it’s unimpressive, remote, lacks fruit and intensity. It’s only about structure ATM, not really enjoyable. In a serious dumb phase? It’s not bad, but I struggle to like it. Perhaps time in the cellar will help to some extent. 85 points, €21.96 at 8wines.com.
