Drinking in Avignon – Domaine de Montfaucon Viognier 2018, IGP Gard, France

Spending a week in a wine region and trying local wines you don’t have access to at home is such a fun. Even if they are far from being top wines – I greatly enjoyed tasting a few from supermarkets in Avignon at the end of May.

The only white one was this entry level Viognier 2018 from Domaine de Montfaucon, priced just a little over 10 Euros if memory serves. I’m familiar with the name of the producer, but have not tasted anything from them. I found this Viognier convincing enough, to try one of their reds next time.

Clean and precise – the freshness is really nice, though it smells a bit too “technical” perhaps. White peach, lemon and almonds mark the nose, it’s all good, but it’s borderline bubble gum, rather than being aromatic as Viognier used to be. At least at this early stage. Smooth to taste with low acidity, quite typical for the Southern Rhone. Pleasant, for everyday drinking.

Rating: good, 85 points.
Price: Around 12 Euros locally (Avignon).
Value: OK, for a singe bottle (I would not re-buy).
Drinking window: now-2021.
Source: I bought it in a wine shop close to Avignon Les Halles.
