Another outstanding monastrell from Bodega Cerrón: La Servil 2022

A mid-tier wine from my favourite Jumilla producer, Bodega Cerrón. If you are into monastrell or pure, new wave Spanish reds, I highly recommend you to try it.

Opens with lots of reduction (spa, struck match), needs airing. Then you get a pure expression of monastrell, a bit similar in style to Casa Castillo‘s. There are varietal medlar, bitter chocolate notes here, but with freshness and an almost Burgundian savouriness. Beautifully textured, with tension, juiciness and great, chewy tannins. It isn’t really complex, the appeal here is purity, it’s real red wine in the classic Old World sense. I love this. Great wine, 91 points. Drink now – 2028.
