From the same occasion as the recently posted rieslings (here and here). All three were great, but let’s pick the DeMorgenzon now – the producer is one of my favourites from South Africa, but I actually haven’t tasted their reserve chardonnay yet (the basic one is always superb).
A bold and complex chardonnay done well, it’s clearly top shelf stuff. Modern in a way, at least in terms of precision and cleanness. Despite its size and the noticeable heat on the finish, it has freshness and vigor, manages to be full-bodied and airy at the same time. So skillfully crafted. A nutty edge to the white and yellow fruits. It’s still not smoothened out perfectly, might become even better with a few years of aging – and offer pleasure for many more. Outstanding wine.
