My third or fourth bottle of this famous wine, and just as good as previous ones. Seemingly no signs of the passing years, though the style is a bit oxidative (that’s true for all Alheit wines, at least in my experience) so arguably it’s more difficult to tell. I would prefer more freshness actually but how could I deny the quality here.
This is a big, bold, hedonist type of white wine. Loaded with leesy notes, toffee and all sorts of golden yellow dried fruits, it’s full-bodied, mouthfilling and generous. Creamy and lush in texture but crisp, integrated acidity keeps it in balance. Top shelf complexity. More about power than finesse, but feels honest and natural, offers a lot of enjoyment.
Rating: 91 points
Price: around 35 Euros in Germany (bought mine at wein-deko.de, current vintage stocked at Wein Am Limit and Vinexus, it seems)
Recommendation: yes. It’s one of the most important and top SA whites.
Drinking window: at it’s peak now, will probably keep well for a few years.
