Savage Thief in the Night 2018

Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Replace the latter with Mourvedre and you get a classic Rhone blend. This has nothing to do with Rhone reds, though.

This wine could come from the Old World. I still find burnt rubber in most South African reds to this day, but not in this one – well done. It feels natural, in a good way (no faults). Pure, gentle, unforced; it’s even cheerful. Lovely, but on the other hand it’s not a complex wine and lacks the varietals’ character. Red fruits and a bit of reduction. Silky, almost light on the palate, with low acidity and welcomed stem tannins on the finish. I would happily drink this, but it’s way overpriced.

Rating: good to very good, 87 points.

Value: poor. It’s worth trying if are not familiar with the new wave reds of South Africa, though.
